My conversion to Digital (with the FZ5)
3 of 3 found this helpful I have been using colour transparency film for many years (Canon EOS, Pentax Spotmatic, close-up rings, 600mm mirror lens etc). The first digital camera was a complete disappointment, took a long time thinking about taking a photo and screen was relatively dim. Also it gobbled batteries, even the lithium ones.
The Panasonic changed all that. I like:-
The enormous range of zoom (36 - 432mm equiv on 35mm camera). Do note this zoom is OPTICAL. There is a further 4 x digital zoom.
Image stabilization. Unbelievable! 2 weeks of photography from Land Rover moving across desert. 400 exposures and only one blurred.`
TWO methods of viewing the picture, the screen (which is bright) and a conventional viewfinder (allows photography with bright light on screen and saves putting on reading glasses - if worn)
Very light weight.
Easy to use although detailed methods of control of camera are available (Just set the dial to P for Point & Poke)
Zoom & panning available when looking at taken photos.
Battery consumption is low. (switch off when not in use & set auto-off to a short time)
Facility to run camera (when examining taken photos etc) from external 8.4v power supply.
One type of battery charger can be operated from either mains (230v) or 12v car supply.
I am so impressed that, after many attempts, managed to obtain a second one on EBay for my wife.
Not a dislike but slight limitation:-
Not brilliant for close-up. There IS a close-up setting on the dial. You then use the zoom facility to obtain the required image size.
There is a button which, when pressed, gives multiple exposures every time the shutter release is activated. I thought I had damaged the camera until I realized I had pushed this control by mistake!
Recommendation. Get a case for the camera and carry a second (charged!) battery.
