Great for hand held tele photos.
I purchased this lens for bird and wildlife photography. I was looking for a lens that I could hand hold, and the 400DO fills the bill perfectly. It is light, maneuverable, and easy to use. The IS works well, and I personally do not find the F/4 aperture to be a drawback. If you want to leave the tripod at home, and shoot tele, this is your lens.

Another winner from Canon
2 of 2 found this helpful I own a lot of Canon L series lenses. I like them all. Perhaps I am not as picky as some users. It is easy to say that they are heavy, expensive, or not optically flawless. Unfortunately Canon is constrained by the physics of optics, and the realities of manufacturing. You cannot build a perfect lens at a rational price point. I bought the 70-300 as a lens to leave on my camera. I like to be able to grab a camera and get a shot off with minimum down time. This lens works well for me for that purpose. It will handle most any situation that I come on from a portrait to a perched eagle. If it's all I have and I need to shoot a wide angle, I take multiples and stitch them together. It is a manageable size and weight, and I have good success with hand held shots. If I could only have three lenses, it would be this one, a 24-105, and a 400mm DO. Could this lens be better surely. It could weigh nothing and be free. I give it five stars, and I think it deserves it.
