Ants from up here
0 of 1 found this helpful I bought this on the strength of the rave reviews, hadn't heard a note of it. I could not get into this record at all. Next time I go to the used cd store this is going with me even tho they rip you off in trades. I read one of the members quit the band after this (their 2nd) album...hope this doesn't have a "sting syndrome" effect on this band...altho this will probably be my only attempt at this band.

like it but probably won't play it much
Lewis is a fine player. I found this recording more close to avant garde...the rhythms are more free jazz than say the classic blue note sound. Lewis still gets out some fine licks and i'll watch for his next one hope it's al little more accessible say the early 70s pharoah sanders lps ...and he even sounds a little like pharoah

Bessie Smith national treasure
I've been collecting the bessie smith sides...have vol 1 half of vol 2 and now these vol 3's....What can I say it's BESSIE SMITH unforgettable singer one of those voices you never forget like Aretha, sinatra chaka khan.. john lee hooker...national treasures. But I'd say if you were to get just one of these collections vol 1 both discs would be a better choice or the gh called Bessie smith the collection. Columbia rerelased her entire output on 1970 (1971?) I think the sound quality is good .sounds like 78s were often the source but I've also read that some metal parts still exist altho not in good shape). Not long into the cd you get over the low fidelity (that is, low fi for a 100 years old recording) and just focus on her singing which is um, the bomb. I have read that there is a british old jazz label (Frog records) that their bessies are a higher quality transfers...I might try one of their bessies after I've heard all the Columbia transfers. But the CBS bessies are easy to find and relatively cheap. If you love the blues don't pass over bessie. Arrangements are a little dated mostly a stride piano accompaniment..also some hot jazz arrangements with Armstrong taking the lead. We are lucky she signed with Columbia instead of Black Swan or Paramount cuz the CBS recordings were state of the art for the time....still sound damn good today.
