Wonderful film! DVD is low res before de-interlacing, but special features are good.
This is a magnificent film with beautiful music and dancing, stunning costume design, and a neat story line: watching a historical romantic drama built on Indian culture and customs is very cool. I bought it because, after borrowing someone else's blu-ray and watching it four times in a row, I figured I should get my own copy.
Be warned that the picture is low resolution: on my 15" laptop, even when I hit fullscreen, it still displays at 4.5x10 inches, and because it is interlaced, the bars are pronounced every time someone moves. My MacGo software was able to de-interlace it successfully, though, and this makes the image much clearer, and transforms the experience. I think it had to be compressed a lot to fit onto two 4.7GB dvds, so I understand why it has to be small. Had I realised what a difference this would make, I might have bought the blu-ray instead of getting a dvd, but I'm content with my choice now it's made. If you are watching this movie for the first time, or if your software doesn't allow you to de-interlace, buy the blu-ray! It is too epic in scope to be watched so small until you're more familiar with it: there are lots of wide shots with huge groups of people, intricate designs, beautiful costumes, and these are a key part of this movie experience.
However, I am still glad that I bought this, because it contains a dvd of special features, which the blu-ray does not have, and on top of that I do have a watchable (thanks to the de-interlace feature) version of the movie. So in the end it was a worthwhile purchase, and I would suggest it to people who love the movie, and want access to deleted scenes, interviews, and sing-along features.
