Laid Back RAF Fighter Pilot at War
Just look at the cover photo! Sideburns so big that he's groomed them into a rip roaring RAF mustache. This guy's not the more common totally focused professional fighter pilot. This is the self-told story of an RAF fighter pilot assigned to fly Tornado strike aircraft, nearing the end of his career when Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990. Britain's decision to join the US in going to war over Kuwait's bad fortune finds the author wondering why the hell he's going to war against Iraq. His attitude is odd for a career professional military officer who had been trained to fight whoever his government deemed to be an enemy. He seems to believe that being in the RAF was all about flying cool jets. Fighting the Russians in a Cold War gone hot might be OK, but apparently he was baffled by going to war against anybody else. And he seems very surprised by the fact that he or his mates might actually get shot down or killed in war. In any case he decides to do his job regardless of his personal doubts (that's nice) and he's a flight leader of eight Tornado crews. He's apparently always been a bit fast and loose (and controversial) in his way of doing things and this does hurt his ability to lead his troops in battle, but he believe all in all that he did OK. He flies a number of harrowing combat missions, and his descriptions of these are very interesting. Its a good story of the RAF at war in DESERT STORM. After the war be retires but not before crashing a Tornado on a training mission in Germany. He doesn't think the crash was his fault but the investigator's thought otherwise and it was an unhappy way to end his RAF career. This was an interesting story of a really colorful fighter pilot and his struggle with the deadly reality of finding out that being in the military means being a pawn, and it is a close up look at RAF Tornados at war. I enjoyed it and learned much from this book. Yes, I highly recommend it.

A Wonderful look into the Past
I have found that when Prof Dorsey Armstrong lectures, it’s gonna be good, very well written, interesting and well presented.

Cute care cute book
Nice selection of color photos with minimal captions of 2CVs in Europe. More artsy photos than I cared for but I guess the author was trying to avoid lots of photos of same thing over and over. All in all, a nice little coffee (cafe) table book.
