The Thyroid Solution
1 of 1 found this helpful This book gives a great deal of information to help you and your doctor to determine if your health problems are thyroid related. Information includes medications, diet and other means of balancing the thyroid and regaining health. It includes all ages of patients, a variety of problems that present as vague and yet when put together show the thyroid connection.
It also clearly states that recovery takes time, months and sometimes years and encourages the patient to understand the delicate balance of the endocrine system so they will keep to the program. Well written but text book in form.

Taking Chance - Taking our fallen warriors home
10 of 10 found this helpful We hear the numbers, we read the statistics, but we don't really understand what the loss of a soldier in battle means in human grief. This touching movie documents the bringing home of a fallen soldier and seeing that his body is returned to his family in a dignified and honorable way. Based on a true incident, it begins with an officer deciding he would like to escort the body of a soldier to his family. Step by step we accompany him through the process and are touched by the respect and caring shown to him and his cargo by people along the way.
There are no war scenes, no blood, no gore and no scenes inserted for shock value. Rather it gives us glimpses of these things through the words and actions of those who are directly or indirectly involved in the return of a young soldier's remains to his family. It removes the political opinions, the anti-war protests, and the questions of why we are involved in this war, and replaces them with an inside view of a soldier's death and return that we rarely get to see.
I particularly appreciated how the movie drove home, in the kindest way possible, the point that every soldier who falls in battle is someone's son, father, brother, spouse or friend and his absence will be felt deeply by those who loved him. It is one of the most touching films I've seen in a very long time and would recommend it to anyone who would like to have a better understanding of what a war really costs in terms of human life.
Kevin Bacon did an outstanding job as the officer accompanying the body home. He powerfully conveyed the emotions of the film without hype or slobbering emotion. The dignity and genuine caring he portrayed was reserved and tasteful. In fact, the whole film is well done.

Second Hand Lions
Once in awhile a movie comes along that tugs at your heart as it entertains you. Second Hand Lions is just such a movie. The acting is superb, but what else could it be with headliners like Robert Duvall and Michael Caine leading the cast. Somehow it manages to blend a story about a young boy who is foisted off on his old bachelor uncles while his mother goes chasing after pipe dreams and two old men whose lives seem to be behind them and who aren't sure what to do with this boy. But, while his mom is off chasing men, he also is on a journey mainly through the story that he is told about his uncles amazing exploits as young men in the French foreign legion. Like the boy, we aren't quite sure how much of the tale is truth and how much is fantasy. But, we can't wait for the next bit of story to come tumbling out. This is a movie for the whole family and enjoyable each and every time you watch it. What more can you ask from a movie?
