16-21mm Speidel Twist-O-Flex Stainless Steel Silver Tone Watch Band 520/03 XL
    Mar 07, 2016
    They call it "Twist-O-Flex"
I remember as a child in the sixties the TV commercials for Speidel twist-o-flex watchbands. These commercials would show you a watch with one of these bands on it and then, the announcer would twist it into a perfect ball and then back again. It would hold either twisted into a ball or in its natural wrist position. They were trying to illustrate how durable and how comfortable their watchband was. They were right! The speidel twist-o-flex was one of the most comfortable metal watchbands ever made. They were legendary. And the one I purchased on ebay is what is called "old new stock". This means that the band remained in its factory packaging for the last forty-five plus years and so, when I opened it, still "brand new". It's true. The band had no evidence of deterioration whatsoever. It went on to the 1963 Fortis wristwatch easily, and fits perfectly. I like men's watches because I think that they are more stylish. I actually forgot I had the watch on one day and found it on my wrist in the shower! The band didn't mind at all! (nor the watch) Now, I don't know if they still make these or if Speidel is in business anymore. Why would such a great item disappear from the market? The fickleness of fashion. American fashion sort of turned its back on metal watchbands with the arrival of fashion that emphasized natural fabrics and materials. Leather bands seem to dominate now. But, if you want something extremely mid-century, super classy AND steampunk, then I recommend that you get you an old speidel off of ebay! Put in on a new, popular watch, and see what it's like to set a trend! Happy ebaying!

Double entendre,Eastern Orthodox Face East, Services.
I like this book because it is a personal story of a family's journey to the Orthodox Church. They have in common with Me being Orthodox and having left the Episcopal Church. They have in common with Me, His being a member of the Clergy, as was I. He became a clergyperson in The Orthodox Church which I did not because Women cannot be Priests in Our church..but our reasons are similar to that of many converts. These are serious matters of faith and theological integrity that, even now, are issues of very public report. Many Churches seem to be in crisis and many church people believe that the harder these churches try to 'adapt' to society, the worst their integrity becomes. For those of us for whom this is so, The Eastern Orthodox Church has become a very popular choice of conversion. Fredericka Mathews Green expounds upon Her and Her family's journey to Orthodoxy, and Her husbands journey from Episcopal Priesthood, to being an Orthodox layman, and finally, being an Orthodox Priest. It also entails the telling of Her experience becoming the wife of an Orthodox Priest--a reality that has its own title of honor for clergy wive's! In The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church that title is Kouria. The Eastern Orthodox Church is sometimes conveyed as a kind of Catholic Church without the Pope. Nothing could be further from the truth. Greene illustrates vividly, and with good humor, how this ancient Church goes back in History to the point where Catholics simply called themselves Christians and shared communion with the Eastern Churches. In the year 1054 a split between the Roman Catholic Patriarch (The Pope) and the Four Eastern Patriarchs resulted in The Orthodox Church continuing its journey without any changes in its beliefs or practices--unlike the western Churches who went through controversies, corrupt Popes, The dark ages.....The Orthodox experienced none of these. She tells the Churchs's story of fidelity to its heritage without exception and without bowing to the demands of Inquisitioners and Kings and popes, and She does so in a way that is entirely light handed/hearted, and genuinely appreciative of the humanity that is shared by all people of faith, their hopes, fears, joys, and sorrows,---and how the Orthodox Church and Faith became for Her and Her family, Their new spiritual home. Very readable style to the point of entertaining! A hard book to put down! A book that definitely has biases about the subject matter as well as the subtopics of discussions of other groups, institutions, etc. Yet the overall reading of the book is affable, engaging, and completely educative. I recomend this book to any person who would know more about The Eastern Orthodox Churches, Russian, Greek, Antiochian, American, etc., and I would especially recomend this book to former Roman Catholics and former protestants who have become despairing of what they may consider too many compromises in the modern western Church.

    "Witnessing a Miracle"
I say a miracle because, in the course of the documentary, Grey Gardens, we not only see the plight of two women surviving poverty and abandonment--but we see them, themselves. We get a real glimpse into their individual personalities and their togetherness and how they live it. We see the unscripted reactions that people have only when they are not conscious of being watched. The Maysles, the documentarians, had a real rapport with the women. They trusted them, and were able to be very unconscious of the camera's eye. Contrary to today's so called reality TV, Grey Gardens is real and even raw at times with verbal exchanges that become quite lively. But these do not bear the marks of calculated response or script as in the present day "reality" shows. This documentary reveals the women themselves; We see their personalities unfold, and we fall in love with them and admire them for there courage and the undaunted character of their survival amid living the life they love and choose of art, truth, and beauty. True bohemians but far more---to quote little Edie: "Staunch Women".
