Schacht Spindle Company Zoom Loom Pin Loom from Schacht, 4 by 4-Inch B4
    Jan 26, 2016
A Must Have for Every Hobby Crafter
It's Alive Once More! I own several generations of this type of little loom ... Weave-It, Weavette, ... and have enjoyed over the years - on and off - to make my squares and then make something out of the squares. It is simply fascinating how this technique has spellbound several generations of crafters. A Great Company Delivers an Even Better Loom I'm so glad that a reputable company as Schacht picked up the patent and now gives this little loom another life! The loom is what it has ever been: A fun, quick, easy to do a craft that you can take along almost anywhere. And now I think the loom is even better than before: Initially I was very sceptical about the plastic frame ... I thought I'd prefer the wooden make of most of the old ones. However, after getting my Zoom Loom I started to appreciate how well the frame feels in my hands. It is wonderful to work with, it doesn't slip or stick as I was concerned of when holding plastic. The frame is a little bit wider than the old looms and therefore more comfortable, and less tiring to my hands. Patterns and Ideas Galore A bonus is the rivival of the network of crafters who appreciate what they can do with this loom. Groups and lists, new books and DVDs, come up with ideas that go far beyond anything I've seen in the past. Going beyond the "plain weave" is taking off like I've never seen it before. And what a delight it is to try contemporary, scrumptious yarns! The small amounts needed to weave a few squares are a wonderful invitation (or excuse) to work with some more expensive yarns. And for those who love "vintage", there are still plenty of crafting patterns of the past that can be used without modification, to indulge in dreaming of "good old times". Don't Miss Joining the Fun! Even if you are not a "weaver", as long as you are a crafter, you should try this loom and join in the fun. No age limit. A great crafting time is pretty much guaranteed, and at the price point it is worth the try, even if you decide after a while that you don't like it ... which I doubt will happen.

    Your Imagination is the Limit
Yes, it is expensive, but it is worth every penny. Plenty of "Get started" templates and intuitive, easy to use tools helped me to get my first design that had been "stuck in my head" completed within hours. The company offers great support: Even before I bought the product they were kind enough to answer my questions and made some very useful recommendations. If you love to design your own quilts, this software will increase your productivity by leaps and bounds.

It REALLY works! Melting glass in your microwave
I'm old enough to have spent my youth prior to the microwave age ... when it is was a privilege to find any setup where one could melt glass. I was very skeptical when my daughter suggested to try to melt glass ... in the microwave. By now I've learned that it REALLY works: In minutes, you'll see the most stunning results. This kit comes with everything that you need to try it out. Be prepared, though, that you very likely don't want to stop after that! I do recommend the kit for older, responsible children under adult supervision, and also for adults, of course. The setup needs to be done carefully, so that the glass melts onto the special paper and not unto the kiln. Also, the kiln gets very hot and stays that way for about half an hour. No problem ... but you need to be careful. Good gloves are part of the kit to help you manage that. The kiln needs to be handled with care. Be prepared that any bump will harm the kiln, and if it should fall, it may likely brake. But ... that's the nature of a kiln that allows you to do amazing things like melting glass. I've owned a pottery kiln in the past that was made of a similar material. Just treat it with extra care, and you'll enjoy it for a long time. A few final suggestions: - Watch for a good price on this kit, I consider under $100 to be acceptablel. - If you shop for more glass, make sure that you get glass that will melt. You can experiment with other glass, too, but it could damage your kiln. - Make sure to always use the special paper/cloth to separate the glass from the kiln. When you run out of the supplies that come with the kit, look for larger sheets that you need to cut into shape; it will save you some money. But most of all ... ENJOY!
