    (Good)-A Dictionary of English Place-names (Hardcover)-A.D. Mills-0198691564

    Fascinating and fun
Fascinating if you're into history, English villages, and/or etymologies. Knowing the source and meaning of the town or village's name often tells you quite a lot about its history, particularly who settled it, when and why. It may also tell you a bit about geography or characteristics such as vegetation or wildlife. There are a handful of places I looked up that don't appear, but overall this is a really useful source.

    Vivid
Hunter's description of the stately home that's the scene of much of the action is so vivid I feel I've been there. And three are unexpected twists to the plot.

    Bleak but engrossing.
This is not cosy crime, but if you like your crime novels bleak you'll love this. Cleeves is very good at evoking location and atmosphere and you feel like you're in Shetland (though I've no idea if it actually is as she describes it). However, I found the motivations for the crimes ultimately unbelievable, and her description of the corpses technically/medically unconvincing.
