The game's story begins in medias res , at the time Max Payne points his gun to a soldier dying mutilated on the floor in front of a hangar on fire . Shortly thereafter , the story returns a few days to a party in a penthouse luxury in Sao Paulo , where Max and his friend Raul Passos work as bodyguards White family , consisting of Rodrigo Branco ( a businessman ) , his wife Fabiana ( a socialite ) and his brothers Victor ( a politician running for city council ) and Marcelo (one balladeer ) . During the party , a gang called Command Shadow invades the apartment and tries to kidnap Rodrigo and Fabiana , but the plan is foiled by Max Days later , a nightclub, the same gang tries to kidnap them again , and this time can lead Fabiana . The set point for the delivery of the ransom is the stadium of football team FC fictional Galatians . However , during the delivery , the paramilitary police Badge Black attack involved the exchange , starting a firefight widespread . Max and Raul escape , but the paramilitary group can steal money . While leaving the venue by helicopter , Max has a flashback that explains how he ended up in Brazil.
