    Birth of a Nation - A Love/Hate Relationship With a Film.
The Birth of a Nation is what has been called the first true blockbuster hit of American Cinema. This film is a land mark for showing what could be done with a film outside of the usual fair that film (and what silent film is parodied for to this day). It showed how you can make more than an actor being a rigid persona and took action out to the battle fields. Truly, film would not have progressed forward in the scope of story telling had it not been for this film. With that said, the film takes a vicious, and I mean vicious racist portrayal of African Americans. The whole second half of the film is a revisionist re-writing the reconstruction period and the positive portrayal of the KKK as the savior of the south and the United States. The Blu-Ray is the 2011 restoration with a different score from the 1992/93 restoration. The Blu-Ray is taken from an archival print and has more tint over the 92 edition which just had really dark red tint in a few scenes. I bought this product because I have a love/hate relationship with this film. I hate it for it's racist message yet I can't help but admire what it did, i.e., not all films have to be boring, but the urge to sing it's "artistic praises" so to speak as some critics have called it is quickly over shadowed by it's harsh portrayal of blacks, who 80 to 90% are people in black face. But then to know that DW Griffith would go on to inspire other film directors like Abel Gance (1927's Napoleon) just goes to show at how influential the film in the terms of story arc (not necessarily content) can be. Do I suggest this film, I emphatically on two levels, if you are studying film and how it grew to what it is today, this is a must watch for that alone. The other reason to watch is because one must see what hatred is passed as truth to keep a stranglehold on a group down, if just to get a glimpse as to how a racist mind thinks. Like I said above, Blu-Ray has the 2011 edition along with the spoken intro dialogue from the 1930 re-release and the recently found opening speaking segment for the opening of the 2nd half of the film. The two remaining discs are the same as the Kino DVD release of the 92/93 edition with the bonus disc. Keep in mind, that there is still a lot of scratches on film on the Blu-Ray edition, as the DVD, but some of the bad splices are not there as on the DVD version. I don't know if any of this helped you make a choice on whether to purchase and/or watch the film but that is my two cents.

Once Upon a Time in America (Blu-ray Disc, 2015, 2-Disc Set) NEW
    Jul 20, 2017
    Sergio Leone's Final Masterpiece
This two disc Blu-ray is a must have. This set contains the European Theatrical Cut and Martin Scorsese restoration adding 40 plus minutes. This film run time history is many cuts and tragic for the American theatrical run. The film was shown at Cannes at it's original length, Sergio Leone knew he'd have to cut some, then the film was edited to the European Theatrical Cut and the Ladd Company in America whacked it to about two hours and making it incomprehensible. The Ladd Company took out most of the back story except for Robert DeNiro's character going to jail and put the adult section in chronological order. If this is the version you've seen, the two hour version, whether you liked it or hated it (especially if you hated it and like Leone you need to at least see the European Theatrical Cut) must see these versions. For those that know the film, the extra scenes are not filler. The conversation Robert DeNiro has with the lady in the cemetery getting information is truly a scene that should not have been cut. Also at the end in James Wood's office in his house, however, I don't want to do a spoiler alert so I'll end here on that point. Please note, there is a quality difference in the added scenes, so even if you have not seen it in awhile you'll know the added scenes to the European Theatrical Cut. Also note, this is not the full Cannes cut, who owns what rights wise, or physical elements, all wanting too much money made that an impossibility. Martin Scorsese said he'd like to do a full restoration one day if all parties can come to an agreement but for now this will do. Some of these sets even have a digital copy download but I think they are expiring soon (2018). Grab this set while you can.

The Red Violin: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
    Jul 20, 2017
    Great movie, great sound track.
If you loved the movie, especially the soundtrack, you'll love the CD. It has all the main cuts from the film plus the suite at the end of the CD that the composer wrote which expands musical cues from film. When I ordered it on eBay I ordered two copies, one for me and one from my mom. Mom may be in her 70's but she has that habit of, "hey, can I borrow that?" And I never see a CD again, LOL. But seriously, if you like the music from the film get the soundtrack.
