SD450, a good budget camera for the static photographer
4 of 4 found this helpful I got this camera because I needed a digital camera to document some work in my lab and various other projects. It fullfils this role with few complaints. My main requirements was something that was at least 3 Megapixel and used an SD card, since all my devices use SD cards and I have many 1GB and 4GB cards lying around. This camera is 5.0 Megapixel and can take SD cards up to 4GB.
It has the added benefit of most options being very easy to access, for example turning off the flash or changing the file size/ compression without the need for consulting the manual. It also has a battery that lasts a relatively long amount of time, I never had it die on me during a single photosession. When the battery warns it is getting low, it doesn't do so in an annoying way (like many devices), and lets me finish a session. The USB direct connect is useful for computers without an SD card reader, and works without any additional software under Windows (SP2) and Linux (you need the appropriate USB gadet driver in the kernel, which most modern distros include by defaults). The rather large LCD screen is also useful for proofing photos, although I've seen larger screens on smaller cameras.
As far as the software bundle is concerned, I never used it so I can't say. I use GIMP 2.2 on Linux for my minimal photoeditting needs and Paint Shop Pro 7.0 when forced to use Windows.
The downsides include that the camera asks for a date on startup, so I always have to click ignore. It bugs me just enough to mention, though not enough to look it up in the manual. It also could be smaller, there are digital cameras in the 5.0 and 7.0 Megapixel region that about half the size. The size of this camera is about that of two large men's wallets stacked on top of each other. I've seen some (significantly more expensive) SONYs that were less than half. The camera is just large enough that it can not be carried in a pocket easily. However, since I mainly take pcitures in my lab for work I could not justify the added expense of a smaller model, which was roughly double.
Image quality is generally very good, and the built-in compression settings don't cause JPEG artifacts. It also supports RAW in case one needs higher resolutions. For most of my work, I just resize down anyway, so I'm not streching its capacity. As far as colors, I don't have a very artistic eye, but they don't seem to be distorted in any detectable way (for example everything isn't tinted green).
The focus and shutter speed, however, are bad. At high zooms, the auto-focus doesn't work well and images come out blurry. The situation is magnified (no pun intended) when using a flash as the focus calibrates for the darkened environment. I basically have to use manual focus, or manual correction of autofocus, for every shot. This is also why I disable the flash and use my own lighting. Moving objects would be even more of a problem, but luckily the things I image are generally very still.
For someone wishing to document work in one place, this camera is a good deal. For someone trying to take pictures on the go, look elsewhere as this camera is not small enough, or quick enough to focus for such use.

Great decanter, okay glasses
Good value for the price, the decanter is a quality clear glass version of a traditional Venetian decanter. The wine glasses are definately cleaper looking, at least up close. There are clearly molded glass (with the 3 deep cuts on the side that basically go up the entire way) insted of cut crystal.
Either buy if you just want the decanter, or need some cheaper wine glasses you don't mind if the family breaks. The glasses work well enough, they hold a generious quantity of wine, but won't impress.
