Sharpness of a prime lens with the convenience of a zoom + light weight!
I bought the Nikkor 20-35mm last year on ebay because I needed an "event" lens as I like to say. I was hired to shoot some special events and a wedding too and all I had for a pro lens was a Nikkor 50mm 1.4....a great, great lens, but really difficult to shoot an entire event with. I shopped ebay for a Nikkor pro f/2.8 zoom. I have a DX Nikon and the first lens I thought of was the 17-55mm, a monster lens with a hefty hefty price...but it's a helluva lens. Instead, I stumbled upon the Nikkor 20-35mm f/2.8 and although it's essentially a 30-52mm on a DX, I knew I would be able to make this baby work for me, and just a little over half the cost of a 17-55mm.The lens build quality is incredible and the images are razor sharp. The shots I took with it made my customers very happy...which made me happy because of subsequent gigs. I shot some family portraits outside with this lens and at ISO 100-200 w/fill flash....the colors and sharpness are so freakn' awesome that I haven't even used manual focus and I don't see the need. It focuses so fast and accurately, why make life harder? It is also LIGHTWEIGHT for a pro zoom, another HUGE plus when you've got your camera, grip, flash, strobo-frame, already weighing you down, this lens is a blessing on your neck and shoulders. I shoot sometimes for a school sports photography company and use their D1X with a 28-70mm f/2.8 and I swear, my shoulder muscles hurt for DAYS after an all day job shooting with that massive lens. The single drawback to the 20-35mm, obviously, is using this lens on a DX camera. The zoom range is obviously short, and at 30-52mm, not ideally wide, but for an "event" lens, you learn the zoom range and you place yourself in the right spot...the zoom is just enough to make those small crop adjustments in the camera. I'd still like to get the Nikkor 17-55mm, because that is the ultimate "event" or "people" len$$$, but I've been so happy with my 20-35mm that I can wait.

Hit Rate Beast
Using this lens professionally on wedding shoots and it’s sharper than all other wide angle zooms I’ve tried in the past, like the 17-40mm f/4 and both the 16-35mm f/2.8 versions Mark 1 & 2. I haven’t tried the f/2.8 Mark 3 16-35 and I’m sure it’s a beast in the field but the f/4 with Image Stabilization has helped my hit rate go even higher. In my opinion, the sharpness of the 16-35mm at f/4 rivals my prime lenses. Stopped down to 5.6 for group shots and I have a hard time figuring if it was my 50mm or the 16-35 when editing time comes. It’s also smaller, lighter, and much less expensive than the 16-35mm f2.8 Mark 3 on the used market. When the light goes really low at receptions, I just switch to my 24mm f1.4 Mark 2 for wide shots.
“Your mileage may vary” as they say about camera gear but I’m really happy with this lens, it’s superb.
