A Comprehensive but somewhat quaint collection
2 of 2 found this helpful Although this book is spotty and inconsistent, it contains a wealth of valuable information about the history and practice of the martial arts. Its sheer size and weight should indicate that there is enormous content within its pages, and it does not disappoint.
On the downside, it is sloppily and unattractively put together, and chopped into “sections” that may seem to overlap. It did make sense to have “Movies” and “People” be separated from concepts like History, but it could have been done better. Compared to Michael Finns beautiful “Martial Arts Complete” this volume may look shabby, but when you delve into it you find a huge volume of information.
My other criticism is that it is wildly inconsistent in the amount of coverage it gives various subjects. Some topics seem to be skimmed over as quickly as possible, while others are treated exhaustively.
In spite to its shortcomings, this is still a valuable book and I would definitely recommend it.

The threats are enormous, and few people understand the profound depth of the problem of protecting their personal information and identity once it leaves their immediate possession.
According to PC Magazine, the average American’s personal information exists in over 50 databases, and those are surprisingly porous. The bad guys are out there doing everything they can to take what is yours.

an amazing and entertaining collection - you need it

I read it many years ago, and wanted a copy for my personal library, since it contains many great stories by many great contemporary (to the 1950s-70s that is) SF writers. I would have preferred a hardcover edition, but the prices for them are ridiculous, so, obviously, many people know how good this is.
My wife is a magazine editor, and when stories come in, they are almost always far too long. The agony of editing and reducing can be traumatic. There are times when it is appropriate for works to be hundreds (or even thousands) of pages long, but not always.
Just as computer code needs to be tight and clean for best performance, so it is that writing a complete story in a few hundred or a very few thousand (and some cases, a few dozen) words is an artform in itself.
This is a great book to keep around to fill in those spare moments, since these stories average less than 3 pages each. It is beautiful to see how rich and full these exercises in economy can really be.
Highly Recommended !
