A amazingly accurate portrayal of immigration to America and Ellis Island.
I thought the beginning was rather weird. However at the point where the family arrives at the docks in Italy to prepare to come here where it is incredible. You would not believe the attention to detail in the port in Italy and at Ellis Island. The Ellis Island scenes are what sets this movie apart. You KNOW this is based on letters and interviews, as well as official documents and photos. Arranged marriages, the mental testing, the phyical exams, etc are just amazing. The US Army and immigration uniforms shown - very accurate). You can just imagine a group of Russians or Germans or Swedes in 1922 or 1923 coming here (there are some in the movie, but this is really set around the Italians. If you see the movie you know what I mean). Whatever happens to the groups of Italians in the movie could just have easily been Russians, Germans or Swdes. All the translators for example. Amazing. It made me think of a documentary, but with actors and actresses. The very last scene is a metaphor for coming to America (land of milk and honey) so it's kinda weird there too.
