Sugino Engineering Corporation makes the best cranksets and chainrings.
Sugino cranksets and chainrings include the best engineering, manufacturing and alloy materials, was for many years Japan's #1 crankset and chainring maker and continues to produce top quality bicycle components. For 700c wheels on commuter and touring bikes, the 46T chainring I got could be a little too big for a 1x gear train and a little too small for a 2x gear train but a 46T or 48T chainring can be just right for a 3x, triple crankset powering a 12-34T freewheel or free hub cassette and Sugino offers them in 7/8- and 9/10/11- speed sizes.

Covers all the basics of older bikes
I like bikes from the early 70s to mid 80s and this first edition Park Tool book of bicycle repairs, BBB-1, covers the basic skills needed to repair those older bikes and newer bicycle technologies up to 2005. I have been working on my own bikes for a long time, but it is worthwhile to read this book to get repair tips and techniques from a long-time professional in the bike business.

The best crank arms available
Unfortunately, in the past few years Shimano has downgraded triple crankset components and, with the exception of Shimano Sora road components, about a year ago, as of this writing, Shimano pulled the plug on all but Tourney triple crankset components, effectively terminating high quality bicycle triple gear train components including high-tooth capacity 9-speed front and rear derailleurs which work well with 8-speed chain which works well with 5/6/7/8/9-speed gear trains, a major changeover in the Western bicycle industry. But then there is the huge Asian bicycle market which mostly runs with freewheels and an 8-speed freehub would be at the top of the line there with 9-speed being exotic. Sugino Engineering Corporation of Japan makes the world's best engineered, best manufactured and best of alloy material cranksets and is active in the Asian bicycle market and the excellent Dia-Compe of Taiwan is also active in that market. Here in USA I am collecting my own stockpile of triple gear train components, while available, and eBay is the place to shop for that.
