An Important Biography, But With No Lasting Impression!
As I devoured this obscure story, all I could think was, DeArment has done it again- found a gold nugget on the prairie, where nobody thought to look, and he had the talent and good sense to pick it up and prove once again how the American West is some kind of inexhaustible honey hole of stories, many worthy of these writer's talents and our time to read them. Good job, to both chefs who made the stew.
Ben was a good-hearted, "hail fellow- well met" with criminals and politicians alike, who seemed to be comfortable on both sides of the law, as long as he had buddies to hang with. Buddies who ranged from Dutch Henry Born, rustler chieftain on one end, to Bat Masterson and Teddy Roosevelt on the other end. I was not convinced that Ben Daniels actually achieved any measure of redemption, but rather pushed his luck in every situation; a chameleon opportunist who never got exposed, and who played every benefactor perfectly to the hilt.
I will be rereading this bundle of conundrums for the rest of my life.

Like the Word, Timeless Wisdom and Inspiration
This book, a study of the Beatitudes, is a great read, chock full of remarkable interpretations and applications. A friend loaned me this book years ago, and i neglected to ever read it or return it. Going through my "things to return box" I saw it, and decided to finally read it... and WOW, what a great book! I found it more relevant to my life now than it ever could have been then. So I bought my own copy, and now have to go find the gentleman who loaned me his. A belated Thank You, Michael, and thank you Max Lucado!

The Kale of History: Sometimes You have to Eat It
This classic, yet sporadically revolting volume is essential reading, for anyone interested in Texas or Native American history. Few if any Apaches or Comanches were ever able to convey as much of their story as Herman Lehmann, since he was more easily acculturated and educated, after spending his formative years as a Plains tribesman. Raised a German-Texan, and kidnapped quite young, he stayed true to his Comanche friends and would have his Apache adopted family, had tragedy not interfered. Few other persons could have spoken so frankly and effectively for all three cultures! This unpretentious book is not burdened with the prejudice or political agendas of our generation, nor those of his own. It may have been discounted by some later scholars who found his story outlandish or unreliable, but for many Western buffs, it only illustrates what we already know, that truth is always stranger and much more entertaining than fiction.
