A closer look at Japanese Verbs and Essentials...
1 of 1 found this helpful This is my review for Japanese Verbs and Essentials of Grammar (3rd Edition) by Rita Lampkin. If you're already a fervid linguist or Japanese lingual enthusiast or if you're just picking up a Japanese langauge guide for the first time, this book is an excellent resource for learners of all levels. It provides quick and concise explanations of major parts of grammar and focuses on using real-life sentences that can be memorized easily for better immersion. The book highlights the various written forms of the language briefly, and also offers cultural notes near the index of the book. The pros of this book would be the well organized breakdown of the verb forms, Japanese particles and other grammatical elements. The aid of the examples helps give the reader a GENERAL idea of how to speak the language, but can also be frustrating or misleading for lack of depth in detailing how to construct sentences correctly. It's important to understand fully that this is more of a Quick Reference guide rather than a high school or college grammar textbook, and that the examples provided (sometimes one, two or three tops) don't always clarify how to use the word highlighted when and where.
Also if you already own Japanese Verbs and Essentials of Grammar Edition 2 (it has a black, yellow and blue cover and was printed in 2004) I wouldn't highly recommend buying this book only because it really isn't much different than Edition 2. It might be slightly more expanded in noun lists, but as far as the grammar and verb lists are concerned; it's again the same Quick reference guide and won't really detail much more than edition 2 did. (just trying to save you some money) but if you're like me and can't get enough reference type material it's a great book for the Japanese philologist or beginner! (Just a quick "by the way" to beginners; Japanese Verbs and Essentials Edition 2 was one of my first Japanese language books so I'd recommend either that edition or the 3rd Edition if you don't own either.)

My review for Yokai Attack!
A quick flip through this book and you'll see how these ghosts, demons, and spectres influenced Japanese horror and mystique well into the modern day. Yokai Attack! is an awesome book that will be well appreciated by any folklore reader and any mythology enthusiast. What is most interesting about this book is that it takes you out of the mundane and introduces you to unimaginable creatures of all sorts that most of us (in America anyway) don't get to cover in an English literature class in school. The pages are well illustrated and this witty survival guide also gives you a wider look into the culture of an older and almost forgotten Japan, and the spooks that once haunted its lands at night. The one and only thing that could've made this better was more Yokai! Here's hoping my review will help you to add this one to your book collection.
