An old, fast focusing tele-zoom lens from Nikon
1 of 1 found this helpful I had this lens for a few weeks now. I found this lens is versatile for the following reasons:
1) It is the fastest focusing lens that I have ever experienced. This should not surprise to anybody due to that Ken Rockwell has reported it on his website (www.kenrockwell.com). This lens is ideal for shooting outdoor sport events when enough light is available. For indoor sport events, it may be a little bit too slow. I would use Nikon 70-200mm/f2.8 for indoor sport events to get good results.
2) It has a very useful macro mode - I have used this lens for flowers and the pictures turn out to be fantastic. It's sharp and gets beautiful bokeh. However, it is manual focusing in Macro mode. Unlike the Nikon 35-70mm/f2.8, the macro mode is working for the entire range from 70-210mm instead of working at only 35mm with 35-70mm/f2.8.
This lens is built solid for professional use. The push-pull zoom mechanism is in the same family of Nikon 35-70mm/f2.8 and Nikon 35-135mm/3.5-4.5. I owned all of these lenses and like them very much.
Overall, this is an older zoom lens from Nikon. However, it is a very valuable lens to average photographers to use for a long time.

A versatile all around lens from Nikon
1 of 1 found this helpful I bought this lens in very good conditions about a month ago. The main reasons that I bought it are because of relatively good reviews and its very useful range of 24-120mm.
Immediately, I was impressed with its built quality. It feels solid in my hands. With the large HB-11 hood on, I don't see ghosting when shooting directly facing the sun. At 24mm, however, I do see significant distortion that is always been mentioned in different reviews.
Overall, with very useful zoom range, it can be a very good all around lens for you when travelling.

Solid professional lens ideal for portrait
1 of 1 found this helpful This is a solidly build professional lens ideal for portrait. It's suitable for wedding, birthday or any family gatherings. The optic quality is superb and the 35-70mm range is ideal for the listed occasions. It's sharp wide open and the color saturation is unbelievable. I owned both the D-version and the older non-D version. I love both of them.
People have complained that the push-pull and 35-70mm zoom range limit its use. This depends on what do you do with it. I found that both push-pull and 35-70mm zoom range are very useful for weddings. The prices of the new Nikon lenses in the same zoom range are sky rocketed, but the optic quality is not much improved, or it could be inferior. Hence, the prices for this lens have gone up drastically. I can get a decent one for about $300 just a year ago. But recently, you are going to pay for more than $400 for a OK ones, especially for the D-version.
Overall, this lens is one of the best lens in the Nikon line up. I enjoy every pictures taken by this lens.
