Moving Gracefully Toward Cult Status 2008/09/07
2 of 2 found this helpful There are very few digital camera models--new or used--that have an articulating LCD display, an electronic viewfinder (EVF), 30fps 640x480 movie mode, and a remote. Only two have all that plus a 10X lens with VR. Those would be this camera, and the Canon S1 IS. But the Canon has internal corrosion issues, as is evidenced by the number of defective ones for sale on Ebay. That leaves the Nikon Coolpix 8800.
There are currently a number of used 8800s available on ebay, because many of the original owners of these 8800s are moving up to digital SLRs. But if you read the rest of the reviews here, you'll see that some who have sold theirs have missed some of the features of this camera...and some have repurchased a second 8800 after previously selling their first one.
Looking past its well documented shortcomings, the 8800 truly is a fine achievement, manufactured in Japan, with a quality Sony CCD. Eventually more will notice that this camera offers both quality and desirable features that you just can't get any more.
For example, the nice thing about an EVF is that you don't need your glasses to see clearly what's of interest, both the image to be taken, and the camera menus where settings are adjusted. But DSLRs don't offer EVFs.
The articulating LCD display on the 8800 is precision engineered, works smoothly, and fits the camera beautifully. It's the pinnacle of articulating LCDs. And it's very useful. But with the trend toward huge LCD displays, the era of the articulating LCD is ending...there's just not enough room to have both.
The remote lets you join the rest of the people in the picture, and you can take lots of pictures without having to walk back to the camera--much better than just a camera with timer-mode. But remotes, too, are becoming rare among the current offerings.
To my knowledge, no DSLRs offer movie mode. But with memory now so cheap, it makes more sense than ever to use it often--all 640x480 30fps of it.
These features by themselves are desirable, but to find them all on a single pro-sumer grade camera...that's pretty cool and it makes the 8800 special. It's ideal for the casual photographer who doesn't demand instant response, but is appreciative of an excellent lens and the opportunity to take truly great pictures.
Eventually the spike in available used 8800s will dissipate, as their owners complete their transition to DSLRs. But the demand for this camera will continue, for the above reasons, as well as others.

Full steam ahead!
One plastic tab was broken on this item. The design of the fan shroud assembly makes breaking it off very likely during any attempt at disassembly. The tab assists in assembly of the processor heat sink and fan shroud. It temporarily holds the fan shroud in place while the aluminum heat sink is being installed. The tab becomes redundant when the two Phillips screws (that force the aluminum heat sink down onto the processor) trap the fan shroud much better than the broken tab would have. Don't sweat if yours also has this tab broken off. Just make sure the fan shroud doesn't shift out of place as you reinstall the heat sink.
You might want to have some heat sink compound on hand to augment the existing heat sink compound which is exposed when you remove your old fan shroud assembly from the processor.
