Quality at a reasonable price!
This lens is yet another quality product from Sigma's Global range.
Body:
The build quality is amazing. Although it is a plastic lens it still has quite a robust, solid feel without being too heavy [all the weight comes from the beautiful glass inside]. The rubberized zoom ring does have a too firm a stiffness when zooming but I think this will improve with use. The manual focus ring is smooth, albeit a little short [quarter turn encompasses the whole focus range]. The barrel locking switch is very precise and 'clicks' nicely into position but unfortunately only locks in the 18mm position. The Auto / Manual Focus switch is just as precise and is easy to reach. The lens hood, albeit a little small, fits nicely on the 72mm lens and the provided rear and front lens caps fit well.
In Use:
As I am using a 1.6x crop sensor the first thing to realize is the zoom range coverts. The zoom range goes from 18 - 300mm to a 28 - 480mm. This is not as wide angle as I would have liked but then I do gain in the zoom length. The aperture range isn't too bad [f3.5 - f6.3] as long as your subject is well lit [sunny day etc.]. This should not be too much of an issue but you will have to sacrifice a little depth of field. Depending on the subject you can still get some nice bokeh or background blur, but don't expect anything like a full frame f2.8 would give you.
The sharpness of the lens is very good and the auto focus is very quick although sometimes I did have some problems with front and back focusing [missing focus of the subject - in front or behind]. I have yet to use the focusing micro adjustment in camera to see if I can rectify this somewhat but it's not consistently happening, which leads me to believe it is camera related rather than the lens itself.
Picture quality is great as long as you are manually setting your camera correctly for your subject. Due to the aperture range this is not recommended for an "Auto" point and shoot photographer. You will need to know what your camera can do to really reap the benefits from this versatile lens. Having said that, if you have a beautiful sunny day and your subject has little or no motion you can get some great results in "Auto" mode. Low light is not fantastic but that also depends on the camera you're using and how well it copes with higher ISO's.
Conclusion:
For an all-around 'Travel' type lens this would be an excellent choice but as mentioned previously there will be times when it may not suffice. All in all I am very happy with this versatile lens and it has now become the latest member of my growing Sigma lens range I use constantly and I'm consistently impressed by the quality results I get. I am very impressed with Sigma's new direction and I hope they continue to improve and reinvigorate the quality that is now world class. Great job!

Spectacular...!
1 of 1 found this helpful These headphones are far superior to anything else I've tried. Obviously they're pricier than some others, but given the breathtaking noise cancelling, all the 'intelligent' features and quality of build, [for me] they cannot be beaten. The headset it self is quite understated. It's very simple and yet stylish [I bought the Silver which is actually more like a camel or dark beige]. It has a handful of features built in with only two buttons to operate several functions, so it has a very clean, sleek, minimalist look. They're very comfortable, lightweight, foldable and fully adjustable with a metal band for extra rigidity and strength. The ear cups are firm but soft and they're tilted forward slightly to better cover your ears 'completely'. They also swivel and twist a little for better fit/comfort. So now for the many 'Intelligent' parts: It has a proximity sensor built in to the left ear cup, so when you're listening to music it will pause if you remove the headset and continue when you put them back on. The right ear cup has 'touch sensors' which handle all the usual operations [play/pause music, previous/next song and up/down volume, answer/hangup calls]. These swiping operations can be a little tricky to get used to but once you do, it's so very cool to use. A neat feature is if noise cancelling is on and someone wants to talk to you, you just place your hand completely over the right cup and it lowers the music and opens the microphone so you can communicate with removing the headset at all...how cool is that. Besides the headset itself being so amazing the accompanying Sony app gives you a multitude of custom and added features that are too many to list here...look it up. Anyway, obviously I have developed a very strong, almost emotional feeling towards these headphones and I cannot stress how staggeringly impeccable these headphones are. So, if you're budget can stretch just that little bit further [mine had to], it is truly worth the expense for the experience [for me anyway]. Even more in love with Sony now. Thank you.

Works well.
Nicely made, albeit a little cheaply therefore the price. For light weight tripods and cameras only.
The legs weren't as long as I expected so the stability can be an issue with a larger, heavier lens/camera combination. The locking nut/ring at the base works well to lock it from tilting but doesn't allow for very smooth swiveling or panning when it's unlocked as it's very snug and makes a lot of noise too.
There is 3/8" thread inside the base so I improvised with my Manfrotto Monopod. I embedded a 3/8" nut in epoxy putty into my monopod stem and once it was set I just screwed it into the feet...worked like a charm. The bonus with doing it this way is I can take the feet off anytime I want.
All in all I can't complain. I paid for what I got and it will do the job quite well. If I really need anything more stable I'll just have to resort to a normal 3-leg tripod.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Stephen
