Fun little DOS platformer.
This review is for the FormGen CD-ROM jewel case release of Hocus Pocus. Unlike the big box version (and certain copies of the WizardWorks jewel case release), this specific release of the game does not contain a physical manual. The jewel case version of Hocus Pocus was actually a separate, standalone release that never came in a box. This game cannot be played directly from the CD-ROM, so it must be installed using the on-disc installer which runs in DOS or DOSBox.
Hocus Pocus is a fantasy-themed platformer where you play as a wizard who can shoot little lightning bolts and must fight hostile creatures in various realms. Besides action, Hocus also features some puzzle elements, such as groups of switches that must be flipped to make a specific pattern to allow progress. In each level are special crystals that must all be collected in order to progress to the next level. The levels also contain lots of treasures that can be collected for points. There are also some special items, such as rapid fire and super jumps, that can occasionally be found. The game has four episodes or sets of levels, with the last level of each episode containing a kind of boss enemy that, like other enemies, will be encountered in the level multiple times. The switch puzzles can get repetitive, but there is a nice variety of graphics and enemies and some catchy music.

A decent Quake special editoin
Quake 4: Special DVD Edition contains Quake 4, Quake II, Quake II Mission Packs: The Reckoning and Ground Zero, and some bonus videos about Quake 4. There are a few different boxed formats of this Special DVD Edition, such as one that features a slipcase design (very fragile/easily scratched and damaged), and one that has a tuck box design (more durable). As for the compilation itself, it is okay but not amazing. Quake II and its Mission Packs are a nice bonus, but they are missing the soundtracks since the games are now on a DVD instead of CDs. A physical manual for Quake 4 is included, but this compilation does not contain physical Quake II manuals. Instead, the manuals for Quake II are stored on the Quake II DVD as PDFs. This Special DVD Edition is good for those who just want to play the games, but the missing QII music and the lack of physical QII manuals may be disappointing to some players.

Nice compilation of the classic Wolfenstein 3D games.
Wolfenstein 3D by XPLOSIV is a compilation that includes Wolfenstein 3D (all 6 episodes), Spear of Destiny, and the Spear of Destiny expansion packs (Mission 2: Return to Danger and Mission 3: Ultimate Challenge). The disc includes a Windows installer, but the games themselves are DOS programs so they will need DOSBox to run on newer computers. A downside of this compilation is that it does not include the hint manuals/strategy guides that came with the original big box releases. Still, the XPLOSIV release is good value because it includes all of the games. Beware: The 2001 jewel case (with "Bonus: Spear of Destiny" printed on the cover) and Essential Collection releases are completely *missing* Spear of Destiny because Activision forgot to put SoD on the discs, so if you want all the games then get the big box (either the 1992 boxes or the 1998 compilation big box) or the XPLOSIV release instead.
