The Predatory Society -----MUST READ
I require students in my sociology classes to read this book. Paul Blumberg
gives up a unique view into the fraud and deception that occurs in the retail market place. The data comes from interviews with employees in the restaurant, supermarket, dry cleaner, auto repair, flower, clothing, etc., businesses. One of Blumberg's points is that merchants gains customers trust which in turn, permits the customer to be exploited. More abstractly, the lack of social control permits these illegal practices to continue. Here you will learn how brown ground beef is sold to the consumer as fresh, how dry cleaners often
press garments and return them to their owners rather than clean them, how aging fish is made to look and smell very fresh, etc., etc.
The book was published in 1989, but nothing has changed. I purchased this book to give to an investigative reporter of a local tv station. The examples in this book will provide him with enough consumer investigations to do for the rest of his life.
