    Nod to Shakoor
If you are a Jimmy Buffett fan of some magnitude, you probably already know Nadirah Shakoor for her vocal contributions to Buffett's more recent albums and tours. You may not know, however, she has appeared on other albums that are quite different in genre from Buffett's blend of country, Caribbean, folk, rock, African and pop. Shakoor's vocals on this excursion do not disappoint. She enunciates very clearly which is seemingly a lost art. Her ability to belt it out without shrieking or wavering is not overdone making it more effective. Perhaps not surprisingly, there are a few Buffett standards included here. It is unfortunate a few are out of place if for no other reason than the song requires a male voice. The most obvious error is the inclusion of "Son of a Son of a Sailor." At Buffett concerts, Shakoor has a role in that song and it adds perfectly to the original. Buffett himself is included on the version included in this album but here Shakoor sings more of the body of the song than the concert version. That may make sense in that this is her album but it is out of place in the interpretation of this song. One could argue "People Call Me Jesus" seems out of place with a female identity but the truth is this song is growing on me. Shakoor teams with Buffett on another song. "When This War Is Over" is a protest song that doesn't sound dated. Unfortunately, it doesn't exactly sound much like a protest song either as the music is counter-point to the lyrics. Oddly, I do like this song but I am forced to wonder what Eric Clapton's original version must sound like. Some of the highlights of this album are non-Buffett songs. "Why You Wanna Hurt My Heart" (which Buffett did cover), "Give Henry the Receipt," "Let Him Go" and "Open" offer a variety of musical avenues while staying true to the album's theme. "Open" features Mac MacAnally and could have been a hit single if radio wasn't so corporate driven. "Creola" opens the album and is a highlight unto itself. In fact, it is nice to hear her renditions of most of the nine songs once covered by Buffett. If a complaint is to be made (beyond the aforementioned "Son of a Son"), it might be all of the Buffett selections sound like Buffett selections with someone else singing. Given the musicians, maybe that's understandable. It might also be all of the Buffett songs are from the 1970s and 1980s. Personally, I might have traded in "Son of a Son" (reasons mentioned), "Margaritaville" (nothing added here) and "La Vie Dansante" (feels out of place) for songs by Gordon Lightfoot, Carole King and Jill Sobule (as suggestions). All in all, this is a very nice album where all 14 songs happily reside on my iPod.
Dog Guard, Pet Barrier Net and Screen for Volkswagen Tiguan
    Mar 17, 2016
    Great Product BUT ...
I have it installed in my VW Tiguan and it works great. It is sturdy. One can see through it easily when driving. Now that it is installed, taking it down should be no problem when I need to do that, it slides forward when the seats slide forward, and it folds down if the seats need folding down (but you cannot do the latter with just one side if folding down the 60 or the 40 of its 60/40 configuration). The only BUT I would give it is with the instructions. I think they are horrible -- not totally useless, but still horrible. It is one sheet of looseleaf paper, printed on only one side. The company's Website offers nothing additional. Someone independently put up a YouTube video. It was a fixed camera and the fellow installing it did not speak. His hands often obscured the details I wanted. That, too, was not totally useless. I am not a DIYer by nature so I will admit that could be a factor. Nevertheless, I am very methodical when it comes to following instructions. There was a fair amount of trial and error, flipping and flopping, and making adjustments. Luckily, there was a certain degree of logic to it, so when I did figure out what was necessary, I was confident to move on. If one knew what they were doing, it would only take several minutes which is why I spent so much time complaining about the instructions. Having said that, I decided to not knick the rating down from five stars. I'm glad it doesn't mark up the roof or sides of my Tiguan, and doesn't forfeit room for my Dalmatian by extending straight down to the floor of the cargo area. It is very good quality making it a good value.
Technivorm 100 Count Cone Paper Coffee Filters
    Nov 26, 2023
    Fast, Clean Results
Paper filters, first and foremost, should not impart its own flavor and/or change the flavor of the coffee being brewed. The Technivorm Moccamaster filters are wonderful in that regard. What sets these filter papers apart from others that also pass the first test is I never have to worry about clogging issues should I dial in the grind to be more fine. The filters offer a nice clean cup even though they filter a bit faster than other brands. Being faster means I'm allowed to grind a bit finer. If I set my machine off of its automatic setting, I can play with bloom times and temperature without worrying of it clogging and making a big mess if I tweak the parameters too far. (I suppose I could go crazy and try an espresso or Turkish grind size to see if I could for it to clog, but overdoing it has never left me close to a disaster.)
