Blagdon Pond Monsta Vacuum Cleaner Cleaning System Algae Debris Bag 350W Motor
    Apr 05, 2016
Good product, but has a few drawbacks
I looked online for quite some time trying to find the "perfect" cleaner for my pond, and this one seemed to be the closest to what I wanted. I did NOT want a product that expected you to dispose of all the water it was vacuuming up, and the Pond Monsta is one of the few products I found that is designed to filter the water and return it to the pond as it's vacuuming. It does a reasonably good job at filtering out the scum, but the included mesh net that sits in the collection bag doesn't have quite fine enough mesh to catch all of the dirt, so you do end up with some fine particle gunk flowing back into the pond. I was able to find a pool cleaning net that has a finer mesh, and I placed the Pond Monsta collection bag so it would discharge into the pool net, and that helps. The other negative of this product is that it really isn't designed to work in shallow water. My pond has a three step waterfall, and the pools at each of these three steps are all pretty shallow (2 - 6 inches deep). The Pond Monsta just can't maintain suction in this environment since it ends up sucking air as you move it around. I was able to solve this problem with a trip to my local Lowes. I found a PVC adaptor in the plumbing section, and I plug this adaptor directly into the inlet hole in the bottom of the Pond Monsta. I also bought a couple of other PVC adapters and a 25' flexible pool cleaning hose, so now I have a nice flexible hose that allows me to do both deep and shallow areas. Getting it all started is a little bit of a headache since you need to get the air out of the hose, but it's not too bad, and the end result works well. I leave the Pond Monsta sitting in a foot or two of water and just vacuum with the flexible hose (which can also be attached to a traditional pool cleaning scrubber on an extendable pole, so it's really quite versatile this way). The Pond Monsta develops a pretty decent amount of suction. The volume that flows through it isn't quite as high as what I would like, so you have to move somewhat slowly over the areas you're cleaning or you'll miss some of the junk you're trying to vacuum, but it does work and I haven't had any hose clogs yet. I can see where it could clog if you get a large clump of leaves ingested, but so far I haven't experienced any issues. My only other complaints at this point are that 1) the discharge hose is somewhat stiff, so it's a little unwieldy and impedes free movement of the Pond Monsta more than it needs to. Since there's no suction on this hose (i.e. it won't collapse), I think a thinner material that's more flexible would work fine and be easier to move around, and 2) the whole unit is a little on the heavy side, so when combined with the stiff hose, it takes some effort to move it around. I've largely eliminated both of these annoyances by attaching the pool cleaning hose and scrubber attachment I bought at Lowes and just moving that part around the pond while the Pond Monsta sits in one place. So all things considered I think this is probably one of the best pond cleaners out there for people who don't want to have to deal with large quantities of water being permanently pulled out of the pond. With the addition of some relatively inexpensive attachments it becomes quite versatile. Cleaning a pond is never going to be an enjoyable exercise, but this vacuum makes the job a lot easier. If Blagdon would offer an official attachment kit such as the one I cobbled together from parts found at Lowes, that would really solidify this product as the leader in pond vacuums. The ideal setup would be the Pond Monsta head unit (without the long pole attached) sitting down in the pond, and the flexible hose attached to an extendable pole being the only thing that you move around, with a waterproof pocket remote for turning it on and off.

Nice looking engine. My only gripe is with the actual design. I’m using this in a re-power project replacing a much older B&S engine. Bolt patterns for the mounting base and on the driveshaft housing are identical to my older one (good!), but for some reason they decided it would be okay to mount the manifold & muffler in a way that part of it protrudes beyond the plane of the driveshaft housing, so you’re limited in the size of the thing you bolt onto it! They could have *easily* avoided this.
Vacuum Cyclone Red Canister Button Release Catch Clips For Dyson DC41, DC43

Great option for repairing broken canister latch release
If the canister latch release breaks on your vacuum, Dyson wants to sell you a brand new canister for around $100. They will not sell just the broken latch release, and in a chat session with them they claim the latch release cannot be replaced on the DC41. Wrong! With the exception of their prices, I generally like Dyson, but it’s absurd that they don’t sell this replacement piece and instead try to rope you into purchasing a $100 part. This latch release is *incredibly* simple to install. Just take the canister off the vacuum, then gently push upward on the latch release as you press in the two flexible retaining prongs on the side of it. It will slide right out, and then you just slide the new one in and you’re done! The fact that there have been thousands of these sold on eBay makes it pretty clear that this piece from Dyson has a design problem. I would have expected them to make the latch release available at no charge if they’ve got a design issue. But the good news is that this replacement on eBay works well, and it only takes a minute or two to replace [disclaimer: I only had to replace the larger of the two pieces... the other one is still fine on my vacuum. It looks like the smaller piece could require more disassembly to replace, so it may take longer]. I just completed the repair today, so I can’t speak for how long this replacement part will last, but it appears to be as durable as the OEM part, and that lasted a couple of years before it cracked off. The only small negative I’ve noticed so far is that this piece seems as if it might be slightly larger than the OEM piece, and when I press the release down to the position that opens the dustbin lid to empty the contents of the canister, the release doesn’t pop back up on its own. It’s a minor issue since it’s trivial to pull it back up a bit until the spring pushes it back into place, and it may work its way looser as I use it, so I’m not taking any stars off for this. I’m just happy that this replacement piece is available in the first place... no thanks to Dyson!
