Athearn Replacement Gears for Proto 2000 EMD GP models
Even though these are Athearn parts they are the exact replacement gear you need for fix your blue or brown box Proto 2000 EMD GP series model. The Proto 2000 split gear issue is well known by most HO scale model railroaders. Fixing the issue with these Athearn gears is easy. The Athearn axle opening is a little too small and I run a 3/32" drill through the gear which reams out the little bit of material needed to allow the Proto 2000 half axle, bearing and wheel to press fit onto the Athearn gear. The gear must be centered between the two bronze bearings or steel plate which holds the bearing on the truck gear box will slip down on the axle. An NMRA standards gauge for wheel width is a must.

Great Northern Empire Builder 46-Seat Great Dome Coach - 1st Release in Big Sky Blue
The Walthers model of the Budd 46-seat Great Dome(GN called the dome coaches Great Domes too!) is outstanding. Everything about the car is spot on to the prototype Budd dome coach used by the Great Northern on its premier train the Empire Builder. Both the car in "Empire Builder" paint of Omaha Orange, Pullman Green, one imitation aluminum stripe and three dulux gold stripes and lettering as well as the Big Sky Blue scheme are nicely done. My complaint with the orange and green scheme is the orange is much too dark and dulux gold stripes are too orange. On the Big Sky Blue cars, Walthers did an acceptable job on the Sky Blue and the dark gray. They are not perfect to the paint chips from the Great Northern Railway Historical Society, reference sheet number 28, but better than many other manufacturers "stabs" at Big Sky Blue. Only Athearn in their current Genesis and RTR have nailed BSB to the GNRHS paint chips.
The first run of the cars had the modeler drill and install the grab irons and stir-up steps. The last cars by Walthers has these applied at the factory. You still must decal, provided by Walthers, the names, if applicable and numbers. My plans for my model include stripping it and repainting it to match the GNRHS paint chips. Decals will be by Microscale and Railway Classics. The car will have it's under side super detailed with steam lines, traps etc.. For most folks the detail out of the box is more than acceptable. For me a passenger car enthusiast, I want a little more. The cars come with an accurate interior molded in a beige plastic. I'll be tinting windows, installing Plano Models Venetian blinds, just like the cars came from Budd and replacing some or most of the seats, etc. with fine detail parts from Red Cap Lines. I really look forward to working on my Empire Builder

Mircroscale CSX New Image Decals in HO Scale
Typical of Microscale's high quality of decals for model railroad applications. Printing is very crisp and color is good. One set does multiple locomotives. Microscale decals are very thin so they lay down over hinges, bolts, etc. well but you still need to work the decal with Microscale's Micro Set and Micro Sol. When doing decal work on a model, patience is the only way to get satisfactory results. Trying to rush results generally only ends poorly.
