Poor range

I use this in my workshop to turn on/off my dust collector. The on function works fine but you have to be very close to the receiver, like within 10 feet of clear space, to turn off. I tried a new battery to no avail. I also have the receiver in a place that is uncluttered and has clear space all around it. Great concept, poor execution.
