Riding Lessons by Sara Gruen
1 of 1 found this helpful I purchased Riding Lessons after reading and loving Water for Elephants. I enjoyed Riding Lessons, could identify with and cared about the characters, but I can't say it was the book Water for Elephants is.
In this story an overachiving mother returns to her parents to reclaim her life and spend time with her dying father. She seems to have never gotten over a riding accident in her past and must come to terms with what she was, and embrace what she is. When she accepts that life is not picture perfect and that her parents were not the demons she made them out to be, she learns to accept herself and find happiness.
I did at times want to shake her, perhaps this book was better than I thought, and I wish Ms. Gruen would have taken us along on that first time on Hurray, I would have liked that.
All in all this book is better than most and I enjoyed it.

A great author going in a different direction . . .
I enjoyed Ms. Rowling's most recent offering, but I found it a bit of a downer. The characters seemed needy and self centered, perhaps that was her goal, but it does not compare with the compassion and heart of her last books. The book is a bit of a downer, perhaps my heart will always belong at Hogwarts, but try it for your self. She is talented and can incorporate many characters and make you feel like you know them. I am not sure I liked them.

Fly Away Home by Jennifer Weiner
Ms. Weiner is always funny, and she embraces real life situations with ordinary characters. No rosey love affairs, just plan old fun twists in everyday life.
I always buy her books when they become available, and I recommend all her works.
