Constant Compliments
As a scent aficionado who also happens to be a Latin-jazz fan & local concert producer, I purchased Mambo when it was new in the early 2000’s - more as a curiosity/display item (the bottle is gorgeous, modeled after the ‘Cuban Motion’/rib cage isolation used in dancing mambo, cha cha cha, salsa and other Latin dances). I wore it occasionally, but it had fallen out of my rotation for a decade.
Fast forward to 2012: I was greeting patrons in the lobby at a Latin music event I was presenting, one of whom is a dapper, distinguished 80 year old local Latin-jazz musician. After he left the front desk, the entire female front-of-house staff, and a few patrons, literally swooned(!): “OMG, do you know him!? Ask him what cologne he’s wearing! ...If only my boyfriend wore a scent like that! ...I’ve got to get that for my husband!”
I went upstairs and found my musician friend at the bar and said, “Hedrick, your cologne drove the ladies in the lobby crazy! What on earth are you wearing!?” He laughed and told me, “Mambo”. I was shocked, as I hadn’t worn it in so many years, i didn’t recognize it. I was expecting him to name any number of expensive and exotic brands. I’ve rarely seen such a visceral response to a cologne - the women ranged from 19 to 50, from working class to a trust-fund baby. Their verdict was unanimous: “Mambo” was a hit.
By that same token, I acknowledge that reviews of “Mambo” are equally passionate on scent blogs like Basenotes. Those that dislike it say it’s a ‘tragic mess’. But slightly more give it positive marks (among them some of the more ‘picky’ commenters). In my opinion, the nay-sayers are being snobbish in their disdain for this unusual but effective ‘budget scent’.
Since 2012, I’ve re-introduced “Mambo” into my scent wardrobe, and it’s a consistent compliment getter. It is a strong scent (1-2 sprays will suffice), but after the dry-down, it mellows into a luscious, distinctive masculine scent. It may not be for everyone, but at the price, you can afford to try it for yourself!

Calypso Like So!
Sampled this at Harrod’s on a recent trip to London and couldn’t stop thinking about it. A really interesting re-formulated Classic from from a storied house (Piguet). Oh, and Calypso is very much unisex.

Stunning Scent & Value
It is inexplicable that this superbly crafted, high-end fragrance from a well known company is so moderately priced.
