60gb ps3 - backwards compatibility
2 of 2 found this helpful if you want to play ps2 games on your ps3 perfectly (all of them) make sure you get an original release 60gb or 20gb ps3. the first release contained what sony called 'emotion engine' which was basically just a ps2 GPU inside which decoded the code on a hardware level. the following models (like the 80gb) has software emulation which is not exact and runs into problems with a lot of software (see xbox games on the 360). the 60gb ps3 plays ps2 games perfectly and also has the added bonus of perfectly upscaling them to 1080p. there is no lag and the visuals are rather nice. it looks significantly better than on a ps2 w/ component cables. keep in mind that you will need a 1080p television set with hdmi connection to take and see the advantage here. as for ps1 games unconverted to 1080p it is very mixed results. while all work perfectly some look downright awful. something about blowing up a 480x320 pixel to almost 2x the size just makes it look terrible. some games like rayman look great, others like parasite eve and crusader look like legos having sex.
i recommend the 60gb version over the 20gb (20gb lack 2 usb ports, mem card reader and wifi) although if you dont care about those features, go ahead and get a 20gb, itll run you less cash and you can later update the harddrive anyway (they are cheap these days).
good luck and enjoy playing your ps1/ps2 games perfectly on your nice new 1080p tv.
